Same But Different

a global participatory equinox event

TUE 19 MAR 2024 | 6-7PM

BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN [chicago]

Taking place all around the globe on the March Equinox, Same But Different is an international day of public actions for freedom. In the spirit of cosmic equality, this event serves as a global connection for people performing together in public spaces. This sharing of time and space brings us closer together as a temporary (global) community through performance art. Everyone is welcome to participate with openness and in solidarity. Read the full manifesto below.

PARTICIPATE for ONE HOUR, from 6 – 7PM CHICAGO TIME (Central Daylight Time: CDT (UTC-5)), with creative freedom to present actions of any kind within the designated area. You are encouraged to bring materials for experimentation. Embracing spontaneity and collaboration, you will have boundless opportunities to explore the body in relationship to time, space, and objects through intentional crossovers and random interactions with other participants.

HANG OUT AFTER! We will congregate at the nearby Congress Lounge in the Congress Hotel [S Michigan Ave and E Ida B. Wells Dr] to reflect on what transpired and enjoy each other’s fellowship.

Same But Different is an artistic INTERVENTION in the PUBLIC REALM. Here are some things to remember:

  • IMPORTANT: there is no restroom near the fountain – they are closed for the season. Please plan accordingly! The closest one is in the Congress Hotel on Michigan Ave.
  • This project occurs OUTSIDE RAIN OR SHINE. Please dress for the weather.
  • Actions will begin promptly at 6PM and end exactly one hour later, at 7PM.
  • BRING materials to explore and share – but you must take them with you when you leave.
  • There is no power supply at the location.
  • Maintain RESPECT for the public space and leave it as it was found. We do not want to create additional labor for others.
  • The event will be recorded with photography and video for the DFBRL8R Archive and shared with the international community on social media. You have been notified: your participation indicates your consent.
  • Same But Different is an intervention. We are not asking permission to use this public space. In general though, know that it is ILLEGAL to block ANY thoroughfare – sidewalk or street. The area around the fountain is massive! This won’t be a problem. But common sense applies, in general. Same But Different is about harmony and community – please keep this in mind and act responsibly. Defibrillator Gallery is not in a position to help if legal troubles ensue – participate at your own risk and, again, please use common sense.

MANIFESTO: Same But Different (Equinox)

Is an international day for public actions for freedom for all people. Each year on the two Equinoxes, (~ 20 MAR + 22 SEP) the duration of day and night is approximately equal around the globe. In this spirit of cosmic equality, this event serves as a global connection for people performing together in public spaces. This sharing of time and space brings us closer together as a temporary (global) community by encouraging non-violent expressions for locally specific conditions through performance art. Everyone is welcome to participate with openness and in solidarity, embracing and embodying diversity whilst acknowledging each other’s individual circumstances, difficulties, and conflicts.

For this purpose, everyone is welcome to join and/or organize a group performance. The following conditions should be fulfilled if there are no external restrictions:

  • The event should take place as close as possible to the dates of the Equinox(es)
  • The event encourages performative group work with at least two people performing together
  • The event should take place in a public space.
  • The event is open so offers the possibility for everyone interested to get involved

HISTORY: Same But Different (Equinox)

This idea of exploring the interconnected role of the performative collaboration and the citizen in shaping and transforming public space has been a fundamental endeavor of Same but Different (Equinox) and its artists worldwide since a symposium hosted by Bbeyond in Belfast in 2017. During this event, Chumpon Apisuk proposed a day of public action as a follow-up to Same Difference: Equinox to Equinox (September 2016), where 283 artists from around the world (45 locations in 29 countries) worked together in public spaces.

Apisuk said, “It is the day that all states must recognise and allow actions from the people which are ‘peaceful’ and ‘non-violent’. This day of action can be with or without context, but for the recognition of all people’s rights to share the public space together, in solidarity with each other, in respect of each other’s rights to share the same public space, as well as the time.”

More and more countries are experiencing social unrest due to the rise of governmental restrictions on basic human rights. Every continent is experiencing some form of repression of civil liberties, be it individual, social, economic, political, religious, cultural, or environmental. These rights are at the forefront of what makes us human and shape civil society.

The global discourse initiated by Same but Different (Equinox) is based on an openness to talk about public space as a social and political sphere. The pandemic has increasingly shown us that public space is essential for community life. It is a place of physical creation that is repeatedly claimed and interpreted by a variety of groups and movements.

interesting FACTS ABOUT THE SPRING EQUINOX

19 MARCH 2024 @ 10:06 PM CHICAGO TIME (Central Daylight Time: CDT (UTC-5))

The vernal equinox is an astronomical phenomenon when the sun crosses the celestial equator. In other words, on the vernal equinox, day is equal to night and the length of daylight continues to grow and nights become shorter until the summer solstice. The March equinox marks the beginning of astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Equinoxes are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west. At the exact location where the sun’s plane crosses the equator, the sun is directly overhead, and no shadows are cast. Because the Great Pyramid is on the equator, it casts no shadow at noon on the spring equinox.

Neopagans observe the March equinox (referred to as Ostara) as a cardinal point on the Wheel of the Year. One of the four pagan cross-quarter festivals and a major Sabbat for witches, the Spring Equinox is the day to celebrate the reunion of the Earth Mother Demeter with her long lost daughter Persephone, who has been languishing in the underworld throughout the long winter nights. This is the Greek version of the ancient pagan celebration of the coming ascendancy of the Sun, and the rebirth and renewal of plant life.
