KATSURA KAN BUTOH WORKSHOP and PERFORMANCE

BUTOH has an intention “to create something that can not be named on stage” therefore, instead of expressing something by body, BUTOH performs the mysterious body itself.

workshop content:

1) observation (natural walk)

2) carrying the landscape (wind work & scuffing-noh walk)

3) meaning and no meaning (KAN’S BUTOH notation)

4) tansformation work  (visual-sound-innersence-movement-communication and memory)

workshop: WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 13th -15th from 6pm-9pm 

and SATURDAY, JUNE 16th from 2-5pm

workshop participants will perform on SATURDAY, JUNE 16th @ 8PM

$120 for all four classes, $90 for 3 classes, $35 for individual class

B I O G R A P H I E S

KATSURA KAN is a celebrated master BUTOH artist, with decades of experience as a solo and collaborative performer, teacher and choreographer. KAN graduated from the BUDDHISM UNIVERSITY in KYOTO and studied NOH THEATRE with master HIROTA at the KONGO SCHOOL. he performed with the seminal BUTOH troupe BYAKKOSHA (1979-1981) known for its austerity and integrity. based in KYOTO since 1979, KATSURA has since taken his distinctive brand of BUTOH around the world, staging acclaimed performances and collaborating with artists in various countries. among his most significant works include “BHAGAVAD GITA” (2000, BANGKOK) based on the MAHABHARATA, “LA MORT D’EMPEDOCLE” (2004, PARIS) based on the GREEK tragedy, and “CURIOUS FISH” (2001) presented at the EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL where his company received a five star critics’ rating. in 2001, he began an extensive performance tour that has taken him to ISRAEL, EGYPT, WEST AFRICA, EASTERN EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, and the US. meanwhile, his work in performance and teaching has taken him to many remote parts of AFRICA, EUROPE and ASIA. KAN’S current research interest is in the development of BECKETT BUTOH NOTATION, utilizing the BUTOH notation of TATSUMI HIJIKATA as a point of departure. KAN pursues the possibility of the globalization of BUTOH and an enlightenment of the classical JAPANESE NOH THEATRE with the goal of a new communication design for deep democracy. www.katsurakan.com

ADAM ROSE is the ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF ANTIBODY CORPORATION, a non-profit organization specializing in mind-body and occult research.  since its founding in 2009, ANTIBODY has presented research findings in a variety of media including performance, video, and text.   www.antibodycorp.org

SARA (THOMPSON) ZALEK is a performance artist, designer, poet, dreamer. she has been privately documenting her thoughts, drawings, and dreams in journals that span her life. primarily, she is obsessed with the body in crisis, the hope of transformation, and the regeneration of energy through movement. she tasks herself with performing radical adventures in order to become the storyteller, the witness, and the inspirator. she has worked on solo, collaborative, and ensemble works that re-create mythology, rituals, and fairy tales. she hopes to build community through art practice.  www.saratonin.com

JOSEPH RAVENS creates time-based art works that encompass text, movement, installation, technology, costume, and object. RAVENS has received numerous travel and exchange awards that have enabled him to build a global reputation. touching on subjects such as materialism, insatiability, conformity, and alienation, his performances reflect a struggle to find pattern and purpose within an imposing and random universe.   www.josephravens.com
